No Headway On 8th Pay Commission: Employees, Pensioners Seek Urgent Action - 3 Key Demands
8th Pay Commission Update:
The delay in the 8th Pay Commission has prompted significant concern among pensioners and employees alike. The Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS), a leading organisation representing pensioners in India, has formally addressed the issue through a letter to the Finance Minister and the Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Demands for Urgent Action
BPS has outlined three critical demands that it believes are essential for the timely revision of salaries and pensions for over 1 crore central employees and pensioners. The organisation insists that the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Pay Commission should be finalised without further delay. Additionally, they are calling for the immediate appointment of a Chairman and members to the Commission, as well as ensuring representation for pensioners within the body.
Concerns Regarding Delays
In a letter penned by BPS General Secretary SC Maheshwari, the organisation expressed disappointment at the lack of progress since the Central Government announced the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025. Maheshwari noted that the absence of a defined ToR and appointed leadership has created confusion and concern among pensioners nationwide. The letter further highlighted that misinformation circulating on social media is adversely affecting the morale of many pensioners.
Call for Transparency
The BPS emphasises the urgency of these demands, urging the government to act promptly to alleviate concerns surrounding the 8th Pay Commission.
“…the lack of further progress — notably the non-finalization of the Terms of Reference and the absence of announcements regarding the Chairman and Members of the Commission has led to growing unease,” the letter reads.
“The prolonged delay is fuelling rumours, speculations, and misunderstandings, causing anxiety and uncertainty among government pensioners. Unverified information circulating on various media and social platforms is creating confusion and adversely affecting morale.”
The BPS remains hopeful that the government will respond positively to their requests, enabling a swift resolution to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the 8th Pay Commission's establishment.
