KOLKATA: The state government has agreed in principle to extend family
pension as a social security measure with effect from
June 15, 1990 to the widows of non-government aided educational institution employees who retired or died prior to April 1, 1981.

The benefit will be extended under the
West Bengal recognized non-government educational institution employees (death-cum-retireme nt benefit) scheme of 1981.

On September 2 this year, the state finance department agreed to comply with
a
Calcutta high court order communicated to the government on March 9. In that order, Justice Debasish Kargupta had directed the state to extend the benefit of the 1981 scheme. The order
came in response to seven writ petitions alleging that the state had
neglected to comply with the direction on the 1981 scheme.
