Aadhaar card 10 years old? Revalidate
Residents having an Aadhaar card which was made more than 10 years back, need to revalidate their age, address and other details by uploading supporting documents on the 'myAadhaar' portal or by visiting an Aadhaar centre. This order was issued by Gurugram 's deputy commissioner on Wednesday.
To begin with, this revalidation exercise has been rolled out in selected 40 districts of the country, including Gurugram . This will gradually be extended to other parts of India in the next few months, officials said.
Deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav urged all the residents of Gurugram to update and revalidate their Aadhaar - a verifiable 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) - at the earliest.
"The UIDAI has developed a new feature of 'update document', which can be accessed online through 'myAadhaar' portal or residents can visit at any Aadhaar enrolment centre to avail of the same. The new feature allows people to revalidate Aadhaar details by updating the proof of identity (POI) and proof of address (POA) documents," he said.
In the initial days when Aadhaar was rolled out, officials said, many cards were issued without proper scrutiny as the aim was to encourage more and more people to come forward and enroll for the card. The focus in the initial days was only on biometrics. Now, according to officials, the government intends to weed out cards with no proper documents.
In fact, in the past few years, different government agencies have busted several rackets involving fake Aadhaar cards. In some cases, foreign nationals were found to be in possession of Aadhaar cards made with forged documents.
On August 11, for instance, the Karnataka high court directed the UIDAI to provide the National Investigation Agency (NIA) with documents or copies of the documents submitted by 12 alleged Bangladeshi nationals to obtain Aadhaar cards.
"There are residents who got Aadhaar cards more than 10 years back, but they may not have updated it with the latest demographic details. Such residents need to revalidate their details," said another official.
