Despite the government’s commitment towards creating family doctors, their number is almost nonexistent, according to health experts. The national health policy, 2002, talks about progressive implementation of mandatory norms to raise the proportion of postgraduate seats in public health and family medicine in medical training institutions to meet the need for specialists in these disciplines. “ A family doctor has now become specialised who is taught internal medicine, modern surgery gynaecology, paediatrics and more. A survey report released on Thursday by Help Age India, an NGO that works for the elderly, has revealed that Delhi NCR is second among the four Metro cities when it comes to mistreating its elderly population. In Delhi NCR 30 per cent of the respondents reported abuse in 2011 compared to 12 per cent in the previous year. The report revealed that the son is the primary perpetrator of abuse against Delhi’s senior citizens. More than 60 per cent of those surveyed reported abuse by their sons followed by the daughter- in- law in 24 per cent cases. Arthritis confines the elderly FACT FILE A recent study on the bone health of senior citizens in the national capital region (NCR) reveals a grim picture. As per the study, only 8% the elderly population reported enjoying good health without suffering any major problems and 85% of the respondents reported suffering different kinds of problems related to bones and joints. This makes bone and joint problems the top most restricting factor for the elderly. The epidemiological study conducted by the Arthritis Foundation of India (AFI) among senior citizens living on the second floor and above hinted at restricted activity of senior citizens due to various bone ailments. The study was conducted on a sample size of 1,300 participants (900 in Delhi and 400 in NCR) drawn from various parts of Delhi, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad as well.
